First level fusion
The flat fusion subject is indeed vast. It includes a large number of techniques, which produce a surprising number of effects and different results. Therefore, this subject is divided into three levels on the basis of the degrees of difficulty and knowledge of the subject.
The first module covers topics related to glass behaviour in the kiln, starting with the first firing curves. Glass compatibility requires particular attention, and is checked through a series of experimental tests. The production of samples, falling tests and thermal mapping of kilns, lets students acquire the basic operational knowledge to control the fusion phase. Then there is a part concerning kiln materials, separators, fibres, refractory elements, their preparation and correct use.
In this first level, much attention will be given to direct mosaic and indirect mosaic methods, controlled bubbles, the use of oxides and enamels, with an introduction to thermo moulding. |
