Hot glass working
The academic program includes three hot glassworking techniques:
Lamp-blowing, to produce objects using the glass-blowing technique, and the traditional glass pliers of Murano. Roll up, which is a recent technique belonging to the gender crossover philosophy, by relating flat fusion to glass blowing. Furnace, producing precious original semi-finished products to be used in further processing, using filtering, moulding and inclusion techniques. The noble glass blowing tradition and the furnace world lead to very complex manufacturing techniques. Therefore, it is important to underline that our approach is very free and experimental in this module.
These techniques give students an introduction to the furnace and hot glass working and a chance to experiment with the same. We do not intend to be exhaustive. The lamp-blowing course includes thematic meetings focused on the use of pliers, so students can create small objects and animal shapes in the Murano tradition. The roll up course is organised as a full immersion workshop, in the second year. Using the previous knowledge of flat fusion technique, students can realise one or more bowls, observing the difficulties and modifications needed to complete the work.
The relationship between techniques, language and material is very important. The objective is to create shapes and designs, which are coherent with manufacturing. Finally, manufacturing semi-finished products using the furnace involves an alternative approach to the traditional blowing technique. The products made can be used for further works.
