Pâte de verre
The module is focused on glass fusion in moulds. The objective is to give students the theoretical and practical bases for them to develop the technique autonomously. Indeed, theory and practice go hand-in-hand in this subject. After a short introduction to the technique, the course imparts a progressive understanding of materials and tools.
The first part is focused on refractory moulds with a series of practical exercises, which finish with the knowledge of glass charge and the correct firing program. It is important that students can directly control kilns, in order to feel at ease with the raw material and its features during the firing stage.
During the two-year course, work typology varies and operational difficulties constantly increase, starting from simple bas-relief, continuing with works “in the round” and finishing with hollow works.
At the same time, great attention is paid to plan design and presentation starting from common topics for the entire group.
The three-dimensional approach and singular visual, tactile and perceptive effects of glass sculpture are particularly emphasized. As regards the shapes, students experiment the best way to exploit glass smoothness and its filling features when it is heated to a very high temperature. |
